SmarterChild was a chatterbot available on AOL Instant Messenger and Windows Live Messenger (previously MSN Messenger) networks.
SmarterChild became very popular in the early part of the 21st century, with continued user popularity until its demise in May 2009. The entity was the property of Colloquis (formerly ActiveBuddy), a company that develops IM based "Automated Service Agents". Colloquis was acquired by Microsoft on October 12, 2006.
During November 2006, SmarterChild's MSN Messenger friends list featured more than 20 million names. SmarterChild remained extremely popular, and advertisements began appearing in its messages. However, during the latter half of 2007, SmarterChild no longer shared the features or intelligence it once boasted, such as the ability to check user's horoscopes, inform users how many "friends" it was currently chatting to, and the ability to respond to conversation in general. Its most common responses were now "I dunno how 2 answer that" and "I don't understand this fully enough to say anything smart about it..."
As of November 18th, 2008, SmarterChild's AIM agent was no longer offering any services. All messages began with the reply "My brain is retired but watch some cool videos! Send an IM to GossipinGabby and Type VIDEO!" SmarterChild changed his status to "offline" in May 2009 and officially retired from Windows Live and has never said anything to anybody since.
